Controlled Traffic Farming is a valid technique to limit the effects of soil compaction. Let's discover how it works in this article.

Everybody knows that soil compaction is the number one enemy for farmers - just as many of our readers are. Soil compaction limits gas exchanges, water infiltration and the development of micro and macro organisms in the soil. It diminishes root growth and alters the PH value. Many solutions have been developed over the years to limit the effects of this phenomenon, but not all of them have been able to solve the problem. What is it about?

Controlled Traffic Farming (CTF) is one of the most advanced agronomic techniques, even if dates back many years. It’s a crop management system that separates cultivation from transit areas dividing the field into “stripes”. Most of them are for cultivation only, so they’re less subject to spreaders or other agricultural vehicles transiting, which can only move on the remaining areas. This clear separation limits and keeps under control the traffic on farming land reducing as a result soil compaction.

Preserving entire soil areas makes it possible to reduce the intensity of soil tillage, to limit the use of fertilizers or other agents, to decrease energy consumption per unit of harvested product, and to foster the ecological soil balance.

Today, precision farming and automatic guidance systems can be used to implement this technique, detecting transit lanes with the highest accuracy. For instance, a “smart” spreader, equipped with an automatic guidance system, receives GPS coordinates and passes the field exactly on the same path at each passage avoiding cultivation areas.

  • Reduce energy consumption during soil preparation activities;
  • Reduce the effects of soil compaction;
  • Improve soil conditions and its fertility;
  • Reduce the use of weed killers and chemical fertilizers;
